The sixteenth-century fortress, painstakingly restored and modernised to the highest standards, perches on a seven-million-year-old cliff overlooking the aquamarine waters of the Tuscan Archipelago. Such majestic architecture on a small island is unique in the Mediterranean.
The sweeping horizons of the crystal sea, breathtaking views over the uniquely unspoilt island, secluded terraces, infinity swimming pools, frescoed rooms, ancient towers, delightful gardens… after 10 years of sensitive and luxurious restoration, Forte San Giorgio is today such stuff as dreams are made on.
The Island
Capraia is the wildest and remotest of all the Tuscan Islands. Formed by a volcano over 9 million years ago, Capraia remains largely unchanged since the time when the immortal Publius Horatius Cocles famously defended the gates of Rome against all comers.
Here, wild birds build their nests; colossal sea mammals pass by on their journey south, wild lavender, euphorbia and sea lilies grow everywhere among the myrtle trees. The four hundred residents live directly around the harbour leaving over 95% of the Island wild and untouched, save for paths and ancient mule tracks allowing exploration of the island's remote coves and vantage points.
